hello,
I was wondering if there were a way to have the bookmarks display horizontally?
It looks awkward and does not scale well for multiple bookmarks

Hello!

By default, they should be displayed horizontally. If they're not, then it must be a template issue.

You can always switch to the Joomla default template to see how the display is properly supposed to be, then adjust your 3rd party template according to your own needs or correct it if the case, since they are allot of 3rd party templates which are poorly developed, not meeting fully the Jooml a standards.

If you cannot fix the template, I'd recommend to search for another template which is properly developed. But be aware, allot of templates are poorly developed and not fully respecting the Joomla standards, so the search might take a while.
