Is there any way of preventing images from being shown when a news item is opened?

To explain what I mean, I enclose two screenshots. One is the list of stories, which looks great. The other is how the page looks once a story is clicked on. The image which accompanies the story causes problems with the layout. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent images showing.
